The layer your hair lost: what oil is actually for
There’s one part of your hair that people rarely talk about, but it has a lot to do with why your hair feels soft.. or rough.
Every strand has a natural layer on the outside called 18 MEA. Think of it like your hair’s built in protective coating. It helps water roll off instead of soaking right in, and it gives healthy hair that smooth, slippery feeling when you run your fingers down it.
When that layer gets worn down from heat, color, bleaching, hard water, or just everyday life, hair can start to feel dry, rough, and harder to manage.
Most people have never heard of it. I worked behind the chair for twelve years before someone explained it to me in a way that finally clicked.
What strips it
Bleach, mostly. It's held on by a bond that alkalinity breaks, so anything high pH takes it off. Permanent color, relaxers, perms, all of it.
Everything else does it slowly. Shampoo takes a little every wash, and harsher surfactants take more. Hard water leaves minerals sitting on the cuticle and the layer breaks down underneath them. Sun oxidizes it, which is part of why your hair feels different at the end of summer. Heat styling, brushing wet hair, and roughing your hair up with a towel wear it off the outside of the strand along with cuticle scale. Chlorine and salt water do their own version of the same thing.
So everyone loses it eventually, just from living. Bleach is the version where it happens in forty five minutes instead of five years.
Here's what matters about that. When a client sits in my chair after a lightening service and says her hair feels rough and catches when she runs her fingers through it, she usually assumes it's protein. She's been told her hair is damaged and needs protein, so that's the word she reaches for. Her protein can be perfectly fine and her hair will still feel like that, because what actually came off was the lipid layer.
That's a different problem. And protein won't fix it.
How to tell if this is your hair
Wet it and pay attention. Hair with its lipid layer intact repels water for a second before it soaks in. Hair that's lost it takes water on instantly and feels squeaky under your fingers. It tangles at the nape as soon as you're out of the shower, and it feels rough when it's dry even though nothing about it is technically broken.
The other tell is what happens when you stretch a wet strand. If it feels mushy and gummy and keeps going, that's a protein issue. If it feels rough and catches against your fingers but still has snap to it, that's lipid.
You can't grow it back
This is the part that changes how you think about products.
Hair isn't alive. Once that lipid layer is stripped off a strand, that strand can't make more. Your scalp will build it into new growth, but the hair already on your head is what it is. There's no treatment that puts 18-MEA back the way it was.
So the only thing you can do is supplement it. That's what oil is for.
I think this is where the confusion comes from. People treat oil like a moisturizer, and it isn't one. Moisture is water. Oil is a lipid, and lipids happen to be the exact category your hair lost.
Because you're supplementing something instead of repairing it, this is something you keep doing. Every wash, for as long as that hair is on your head. The hair growing in will have its own lipid layer. What's already there needs you.
Why most routines skip it entirely
If you look at what's actually in a normal haircare routine, it's usually shampoo, conditioner, maybe a bond builder, maybe a protein mask if things got bad.
All of those do real work. Bond builders address the internal structure. Protein addresses the keratin. But none of them are lipids, so none of them are doing the job I just described. Most people are covering two of the three things their hair needs and wondering why it still doesn't feel right.
That gap is the whole reason the oil exists.
Where squalane comes in
Squalane is the closest thing in cosmetic chemistry to what your own body already produces. Your scalp makes squalene, and squalane is the stable version of it. It's small enough to actually get into the hair rather than sitting on the outside of it.
That's the second ingredient in our formula, right behind the carrier. Camellia seed oil is in there too, which is the oil Japanese women have used on hair for centuries and one of the lighter penetrating oils available.
There are no silicones in it. Silicone gives you slip immediately because it wraps around the strand, and it does look good, but it's a coating. It builds up, it washes off, and the strand underneath is in exactly the same condition it was before. Oil is a supplement to something your hair is missing. Those are two different jobs.
Why the Shine Spray
Most hair oils are built around one heavy plant oil, and the heavier the oil, the more it sits on top of the strand instead of getting into it. You end up using more just to spread it, and the extra has nowhere to go. That's the hair hanging flat to your head and the ends separating into greasy looking pieces.
This one sits at the lighter end of the lipid range. Squalane and camellia seed oil do the supplementing, and the esters they're blended with spread thin enough that a small amount covers a whole head. That matters most on wet hair, where a thick oil clumps into whatever section your hands touched first and never makes it to the rest.
The mist is doing real work there. It's the only way I found to get an actual oil through soaking wet hair evenly without using three times what you need.
How to use it for this
On wet or damp hair, right out of the shower.
Hair that's lost its lipid layer takes on water faster and swells more, and a swollen strand is the most fragile it ever gets. That's why bleached hair tangles and snaps in the shower when it seems perfectly fine once it's dry. Getting lipids onto it in that moment is when it counts.
Mist it through the mid lengths and ends, comb it through, then style however you normally would.
There's a second time for it, and that's on dry hair right before you get in the shower.
It's the same reasoning coming from the other direction. If the strand swells as it takes on water, putting oil on it first means less water gets in and it swells less while you're washing. Mist it through the mid lengths and ends, let it sit while you brush your teeth or do whatever else you do, then shampoo the way you normally would. Some of it stays on the hair through the wash. That's the part doing the work.
If your hair feels rough and snags right now, do both. Before the shower and after.
You'll feel the difference in how your hair moves before you see anything in the mirror. That slip is the point.
